By creating the Hazmat Academy, NCEC has revolutionised hazmat training by providing a contemporary solution that meets the needs of individuals, and takes account of the modern-day challenges that emergency services and commercial organisations are facing.

The Hazmat Academy is the place where you can network with other hazmat specialists; share ideas; ask questions; participate in chaired discussions with subject matter experts; undertake training; and work in partnership with NCEC to develop a safe, effective, competent and confident response to an incident.

How we deliver our courses

Instructional videos:

Our expert trainers have created a series of high-quality, instructional videos that can be viewed an unlimited number of times. This enables learners to watch, pause, rewind and review the material as many times as they wish, so minimising the risk of not fully understanding a particular aspect or topic.

Online tutorials:

Some aspects of each course can be delivered via online tutorials with an instructor. Having a set number of people in a group maximises each learner's engagement with the content.

Discussions:

During online group discussions, instructors will discuss topics with relevant experts from around the world. Learners can simply listen in or take an active part in the discussions.

Podcasts:

A series of podcasts will soon be available via the Hazmat Academy that cover all aspects of the hazmat world – from actions upon arrival at hazmat incidents to dealing with protracted incidents. Experts from all over the world will take part in these podcasts, ensuring a truly global and holistic approach to hazmat competence.

Online scenarios:

The Hazmat Academy provides regular virtual scenarios that are based on real incidents. These can be used as part of continuous professional development or just to find out about incidents that hazmat professionals have dealt with around the world. Following these sessions, the case study of the real incident, as dealt with by the NCEC’s emergency responders, will be made available where appropriate. Where possible, the on-scene incident commander and/or hazmat tactical adviser will be invited to discuss the difficulties of the incident and the tactics used to successfully mitigate the incident and bring it to a satisfactory conclusion.

UK qualifications

All courses related to hazardous materials and the Site Incident Controller course align with the UK 'National Operational Guidance (NOG) – Foundation for hazardous materials', health and safety legislation, and industry best practice. All emergency response and chemical response courses are accredited by the International Organisation for Industrial Emergency Services Management (JOIFF).

International qualifications

For international organisations that require National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) qualifications, all these courses can be written to standards that are derived from the NFPA. These NFPA-compliant courses will also receive accreditation by JOIFF.
